Jonathan: He started out with a team pattern, a few of them put together this team last night and added a friend that moved away but was coming in for the tournament. They didn't stick together but they were very cute and placed third. He did his individual pattern and kind of added a few moves and ended up in the worng direction but he didn't notice, again CUTE! Last but not least was sparring, and boy was he not happy when this was over. He didn't want to spar to begin with but after borrowing a Dad for a pep talk he went in there ready to go. He then ended up sparring three matches in a row and lost all three. He was really cute after they annouced who won he looked up to the referee, who he knows really well, and look at her like "What is going on?" After the last match he came out of the ring and started crying saying, "I just wanted to win!" He almost made Mom cry! Of course he was fine when they gave out the medals and he cheered the loudest for his friends!
Patrick: He participated in a black belt team pattern and they made a few mistakes but placed third place. He was in a huge group of black belts and didn't place for individual patterns but he did really good, not many mistakes but they were all doing really well. This is the first time that Patrick has particiapted with the black belts and it was very challenging. He was in a group of boys that ranged from 9(which is Patrick's age)through 15. He was in the first match and was paired with a 12 year old from our school, very good friends of ours, so he wasn't not real mean to Patrick. Patrick did lose but he tried. The best part for him was being able to help out in the rings, score keeper, scorer, and just helping out the higher ranking black belts.
Sami: She was a busy girl during this tournament! She started out in the color belt team patterns with Jonathan's group. She corraled one 5 year old and 2 six year olds to get a 3rd place finish. Then she moved on to the black belt team pattern with her brother and scored 3rd place again. Individual patterns was next and she did really good and placed 2nd! She really likes this part and has a good time keeping those patterns sharp and powerful. Next was sparring, and after three matches and lots of her Mom freaking out during them (yelling, cheering, nausea, and shortness of breath all from Mom) she ended up in the 3rd place. She did some breaking in there somewhere but I didn't catch any of that on camera. The breaking was great and she placed 2nd!
Over all we had a blast and came home with lots of learning experiences. The instructor will make sure that they are always supposed to walk away from tournaments knowing what you learned not how many medals you won. Everyone can always improve and if you don't keep trying then someone will pass you up!
